Bottoms was born and raised on the streets of Bristol, Connecticut. Bottoms began training in karate and aikido from a young age and also participated in wrestling tournaments during his teenage years. He was promoted to blue belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu by Renzo Gracie in April 2017. Despite having a background in other forms of martial arts Bottoms cites BJJ as the thing that saved him and his younger brother - also a professional fighter - from a life of crime and misfortune.
